The now- extinct Mariana mallard was probably originally derived from hybrids between this species and the mallard , which came to the islands during migration and settled there.

Overview
Note purple/green metallic panel on wing and slightly domed head. Hybridizes with Mallard. Similar to female Mallard but note Pacific Black Duck’s darker coloration and distinctive striped cream head with gray bill, darker legs and feet. Also look for green speculum with black border in flight.
Behavior
Feeds by dabbling and upending in shallow water, often resting and moving in pairs or loose groups around wetlands.
